The tony award-winning Old Globe Theatre is one of the largest theatres in the country and san diego's flagship performing arts institution since 1937, when a popular venue for shakespeare's work at the 1935-36 california pacific international exposition in balboa park was established as a permanent operation. In a normal season, the Old Globe produces a year-round season of 14 or more plays and musicals, including world premieres, modern classics, new musicals, broadway-bound productions and a highly-regarded summer shakespeare festival. In addition to the artistic programming on its three stages, with audience capacities of 620/600/250, the Globe offers a wide range of arts engagement and humanities programs that contribute to the growth and education of audiences and the community at large.
