Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado, Ph.D., is President and Chief Scientific Officer of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, a position he assumed in 2023 following his appointment as Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer in 2021. A pioneering developmental biologist, he joined Stowers in 2011 and established the planarian (Schmidtea mediterranea) as a modern research organism, earning election to the National Academy of Sciences in 2018 and recognition as an HHMI Investigator.
He previously served as faculty in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the University of Utah School of Medicine from 2002 to 2011.
