Overview

Fortune is seeking an Art Director to serve as the day-to-day steward of Fortune magazine's visual identity. Reporting to the Executive Creative Director, this person will own the look and feel of every print issue, from covers and feature packages to recurring sections and signature franchise issues like the Fortune 500, Most Powerful Women and 40 Under 40. The Art Director will be a hands-on designer and a careful custodian of the magazine's design system. They'll work closely with editors, the photo team and production to bring stories to the page on deadline, and help carry magazine work into its digital and social extensions so the brand stays cohesive wherever readers find it.

The role also offers room to grow into other areas of Fortune's creative work, including video, live events and brand initiatives.

Responsibilities

Lead the creative direction and visual design of Fortune’s U.S., Asia, and Europe editorial products across print and digital, including covers, feature packages, and regional editions. Shape the visual identity of major Fortune franchises, lists, rankings, and special projects—including Fortune 500, Most Powerful Women, and emerging editorial properties. Partner with editors, writers, photo teams, and designers from early story development through production to create compelling, audience-first editorial experiences. Establish and maintain cohesive visual systems across print, web, newsletters, social, video, events, and other brand touchpoints.

Guide the design team and external creative partners, providing clear direction, constructive feedback, and high standards for craft and execution. Commission and direct illustration, photography, typography, and other creative assets, matching talent and visual approaches to each project’s editorial and brand objectives. Manage relationships with freelance artists and vendors, including rate negotiation, onboarding, and allocation of creative resources. Lead logo and identity development for Fortune franchises, accolades, editorial initiatives, and live-media programs.

Collaborate with key stakeholders to evolve Fortune’s brand standards, including typography, color, graphic systems, and guidelines; identify scalable ways to make these resources accessible across the organization. Serve as a strategic creative partner to teams developing new editorial, video, social, and event franchises, ensuring that new initiatives launch with a distinctive and consistent visual identity. Help develop Fortune’s digital illustration and visual storytelling capabilities, including art direction for news, features, and special-project content.
