Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is a land-grant university with a vision of building global expertise in research and education to support the nation’s drive to create a robust supply chain of critical materials (CM). Nevada is taking on this challenge, striving to grow its CM industry across the full value chain. The region is experiencing substantial investments in the industry, and UNR leads the Nevada Tech Hub, with $21 million from the US Economic Development Administration to further catalyze the lithium economy locally. The School of Civil, Chemical, and Environmental Engineering plays a key role in Nevada’s CM growth, and invites applications at the assistant professor level.

The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program aligned with the chemical engineering challenges of the full CM supply chain, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and contribute to undergraduate and graduate education in chemical engineering. The intended start date for the position is July 1, 2027. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field is required, and the candidate must hold at least one (1) degree in chemical engineering. The candidate must possess expertise in chemical processing critical materials, broadly defined.

Candidates are requested to describe their expertise in the cover letter how their research fits under the umbrella of CM.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates whose work advances areas aligned with the DOE METALLC initiative, including processing of brines, leachates, and secondary feedstocks; solvent extraction, ion exchange, membranes, and other novel separation processes; electrochemical and thermochemical refining; process design, optimization, and intensification; technoeconomic and life-cycle analysis; and critical element recovery and recycling using molecular-based approaches. Applicants with experience applying machine learning tools in their research are especially encouraged. A demonstrated record in teaching is desired.
