Profile
The filed facts are verified from the IRS filings. The biography is compiled from public web sources and grounded to that filed record.
Richard White is a physician-scientist and Professor of Genetics who leads a research group at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research's Oxford Branch, within the Nuffield Department of Medicine. His laboratory investigates the origins and progression of melanoma, with a particular focus on how cancer cells acquire new identities through phenotypic plasticity, influenced by epigenetic and environmental factors.
He is known for his innovative use of transparent zebrafish as a model organism to visualize cancer development in real-time. His research has significantly advanced the understanding that tumor location and spread are not solely determined by DNA mutations, but also by these broader cellular and environmental contexts.
Dr. White has also developed the concept of "oncogenic competence," which posits that developmental chromatin programs dictate how cells respond to oncogenic mutations.
