John Gilmore is an American entrepreneur, software engineer, and civil libertarian activist, known for his pioneering work in free software and digital rights. He was appointed to the Free Software Foundation (FSF) board of directors effective June 23, 2024, following a reported tenure in 2023.

Gilmore co-founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in 1990, the Cypherpunks mailing list, and Cygnus Solutions, one of the first companies to offer commercial support for free and open-source software. He was also the fifth employee at Sun Microsystems and a significant contributor to the GNU Project, including maintaining the GNU Debugger and initiating GNU Radio.
