Mendell is a pioneering neuromuscular researcher at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Director of the Center for Gene Therapy and the Paul D. Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Research Center.
He was the first to study viral-mediated gene therapy for muscular dystrophy in humans and led pivotal clinical trials for FDA-approved gene therapies. He retired from active clinical duties in October 2023 but remains affiliated.
