She is a renowned poet, essayist, playwright, and scholar. Alexander earned her BA in English from Yale University (1984), her MA in English (Creative Writing) from Boston University, and her PhD in English from the University of Pennsylvania.
She was the Frederick Iseman Professor of Poetry at Yale (2015) and previously held the position of Wun Tsun Tam Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University. At the Ford Foundation, she co-designed the Art for Justice Fund, a $100 million initiative to transform the criminal justice system through art and advocacy.
