Craig Donald Thompson served as the sole Commissioner of the Mountain West Conference for 24 years, from its formation in 1998 until his retirement on December 31, 2022. Under his leadership, the conference negotiated nearly $600 million in television revenue and led member schools to five BCS/CFP bowl games.
Prior to the Mountain West, he was Commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference (1991-1998) and American South Conference (1987-1991).
