Mission and History

Mission

To improve public policy through rigorous analysis, inform the public with data that clarifies key issues and trends, and strengthen civic life by encouraging democratic participation and vibrant communities, especially in Philadelphia.

History

The Pew Charitable Trusts was established as a nonprofit entity in 1948 by members of the family of Sun Oil Company founder Joseph N. Pew and Mary Anderson Pew. Initially, several individual trusts were created between 1948 and 1979, each reflecting the philanthropic interests of family members. Over time, these were consolidated under Pew’s mission to support the public good. Early grantmaking included support for cancer research, the American Red Cross, and historically Black colleges. The organization became a public charity in 2002, enabling more flexible and direct initiatives. Throughout its history, Pew has expanded its work in public policy research, conservation, health, and community governance while maintaining roots in Philadelphia and broadening its global engagement.
