Mission and History

Mission

Guided by Robert Bosch’s belief in respecting human dignity, the Robert Bosch Stiftung works to address complex social challenges and drive lasting systemic change. Through collaboration, trusted partnerships, and innovative ideas, the foundation supports people and initiatives that strengthen societies and promote responsible, sustainable progress.

History

The Robert Bosch Stiftung was established in 1964 per the wishes of German industrialist and philanthropist Robert Bosch (1861–1942), whose will mandated that the majority of his company’s shares be used for charitable purposes. Initially set up as Vermögensverwaltung Bosch GmbH, it was renamed Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH in 1969. Since its inception, the foundation has directed dividends from its majority shareholding in Robert Bosch GmbH toward social, cultural, and scientific causes. Over six decades, the foundation has continuously adapted its funding portfolio to address contemporary societal needs while remaining rooted in Bosch’s legacy of public welfare, education, and international understanding.

Approach and Operating Style

The Robert Bosch Stiftung combines traditional grantmaking with the development and operation of its own initiatives. It funds external projects and runs in-house programs that generate strategic, scalable solutions to social challenges. The foundation prioritizes evidence-based approaches, interdisciplinary collaboration, and engagement with policymakers and practitioners. It maintains partnerships with institutions, governments, academia, and civil society to enhance impact, and engages across multiple regions while remaining headquartered in Germany. Its funding is financed by dividends from its shareholding in Robert Bosch GmbH, and it reinvests over €200 million annually to support new and ongoing efforts.
