To invest in human, environmental, and creative potential while acting as responsible stewards and catalysts for change.

History

Barr Foundation was established in 1997 by Amos B. Hostetter, Jr., a cable television entrepreneur, and his wife, Barbara W. Hostetter, using proceeds from the sale of Continental Cablevision. Initially operating as a small family-led grantmaking organization, it expanded over time into a larger institutional foundation. Barbara W. Hostetter served for many years as board chair, and in 2025 the foundation appointed its first non-family chair. Jim Canales led the foundation as president for 11 years before Ali Noorani was appointed to succeed him in late 2025.

Approach and Operating Style

Barr makes grants through several pathways. In most years, the majority of grants support organizations the foundation has previously funded, while approximately 15% to 30% support organizations new to Barr. Many grants are multi-year commitments and may be renewed after the initial grant period. Staff may invite proposals based on ongoing engagement with community leaders and experts, and the foundation occasionally issues open Requests for Proposals (RFPs). Barr also accepts inquiries from potential new partners through forms available on its program pages. The foundation does not fund individuals or scholarships and rarely funds capital projects or event sponsorships, except occasionally for longstanding partners.
